The town is built amphitheatrically on two hills. In ancient times Poros included two islands, Spheres and Calabria, but the last explosion of the volcano of Methana in 273 B.C changed radically the morphology of the area. Spheres was cut from Methana and therefore Poros took the form it has today.
It constitutes a quiet but at the same time cosmopolitan destination with components of its uniqueness the lush vegetation with pines, the spotless beaches as well as its dominant graphic capital which has been declared a protected settlement. The town is characterized by the large traditional mansions and the picturesque cobbled streets as well as a great variety of entertainment venues which is the reason it attracts visitors of all ages.
In Poros there is a small island called Daskalio. It is situated opposite the Russian Naval Station in Poros. It is green and it makes the visitors feel calm and serene. In Poros you must absolutely visit the temple of Poseidon, in ancient Calabria, one of the most important monuments of ancient times, probably in the most beautiful place of the island.
In addition, the Monastery of the Life-giving Spring, which was founded in 1720 from the Metropolitan of Athens Jacob B', in the place of the old monastery of the Brigadiers (probably of the 14th century), in which you will admire apart from the architecture also rare icons and exhibits.
It is worth visiting the Archaeological museum of Poros which hosts sculptures, inscriptions and architectural parts from Troizina, Calabria and Methana and do not forget to go through the art room of Poros, which particularly in summer months hosts many exhibitions of Greek and foreign artists.
From time to time, in summer months, many exhibitions and concerts are organized in various parts of the island as well as many scheduled events.
